While I'm disappointed, I'm pleased with myself and I think that I've proved to myself and a few others that there is a major championship in me.

Lee Westwood has admitted it is "sickening" not to be part of the 18-hole play-off for the US Open - but he was still looking at the positives.

The 35-year-old from Worksop missed a 20-foot putt on the last which would have seen him join Rocco Mediate and Tiger Woods in Monday's showdown.

And although Westwood was left wondering what could have been, he was still proud at finishing third at Torrey Pines.

"While I'm disappointed, I'm pleased with myself and I think that I've proved to myself and a few others that there is a major championship in me," he said.

"It's sickening not the be in the play-off but all in all I played pretty well all week and if somebody had said 'you're going to have a chance from 20 feet for a play-off' I would probably have taken that at the start of the week."

Tough

Westwood had led the tournament after reaching the turn but a run of three bogeys in four holes left him playing catch up.

And although by the last he needed a birdie to reach the play-offs, he left himself with a tough shot on the 18th green.

However Westwood insists it was his second shot that let him down - with it leaving him too close to the hole.

"I was looking for something like 96 or 97 yards to the front (of the green) and I got 100," said Westwood.

"I was caught between sand iron and lob wedge (for the third shot) and I don't really want to hit lob wedge hard, because anything coming back fast down that green and it's in the drink."
