Can't believe the lack of people thinking Woods won't win. He's been out for 8 weeks, not 8 months and the last time he came back from a long break he won, then won and then, er... won again. 7 out of his last 9? Second at Augusta with a dodgy knee that's now been repaired? Woods doesn't enter unless he's convinced he can win and I believe he will because he is quite simply a phenomenon and no-one can touch him. Come on Tig !

Robery Karlson has been playing very well recently, and whilst he isn't an obvious pick, epecially with his sometimes errant driving, he must be worth an E-W shot. (I got 66-1).

I think V J Singh could win this one has not done anything for a while. One for the future keep an eye on a young lad from Barnard Castle England called Robert Dinwiddie not consistant enough yet but will be one day, could make the last two days in his first us open here's hoping.

I don't see Tiger winning this, as he hasn't played in a couple of months, and surely can't be at his sharpest. Mickelson's driving is always a concern, especially at a US Open, so i wouldn't fancy his chances either. My outside bets would be Stewart Cink, Ryuji Imada and Charles Howell III who won played well around Torrey Pines in recent years. Hopeful for a european victory, but Harrington is the only guy at the moment, who has the game to win a US Open.

Jim Davidson says...

Recent history shows a non-American will win. With Sergio back on form with his short-game he must be considered a favourite. For me though, look out for Goosen.

Time for another first. Steve Stricker to win in a playoff with Sergio Garcia.

John Halliday says...

it will be intresting to see how tiger plays after being out for so long but of course he is tiger so anything is possible. i really think goosen can go close and luke donald has the game which is requirred for the u.s open. everytime the u.s open comes up i always say monty because this is the best major for him he has a fantastic record without winning it but after winged foot 2 year ago it is difficult so see him getting a better chance. the golf he played that week was fantastic and if he had holed some putts he could easily have won that by 5 shots but 1 will do this week. come on monty....

Ben Hughes says...

I find it difficult to call a winner and could quite easily be another maiden major for someone like Trev at Augusta. Looking at previous records Steve Stricker and Fasth would be a good each-way bet but for a winner i see it coming from either Jim Furyk or Goosen. But with the golf course looking as it will be very unpredictable, the door is open for any of the field with such quality.

James English says...

I think Tiger will win hands down as he has been out for a while so the hunger will be greater than ever. European contenders are maybe Lee Westwood, Sergio and Padraig(who has been in poor form recently, possibly down to lack of tournaments). Lee Westwood has the finest iron play on tour & if he gets the putter going he will be a contender.

Jeremy Partney says...

I think Phil Mickelson will win the U.S. Open. He was in contention at both the Master's and the Players. I believe he has been runner-up 4 times in the U.S. Open. He is playing well now and is able to get a full amount of practice in, unlike last year when he had a hurt wrist. If Tiger is healthy I think he is the clear favorite but there is a lot of speculation that he is not. So I am going with Phil, I think the combination of health, good play recently, and high finishes at previous U.S. Open's points to him.

i wouldnt be shocked in the slightest if harrington got this one. he isnt in the best of form at the moment but i think hes proven that he is a big tournement contender.
